How to Care for Cut Flowers: Your Guide to Keeping Blooms Fresh
Cut flowers can instantly brighten any room, but to keep them looking their best, they need a bit of TLC. Here’s a simple guide to help you extend the life of your beautiful blooms.
Clean Your Vase
Before adding your flowers, wash the vase with soap and warm water to eliminate any bacteria. A clean vase is essential for keeping your flowers fresh.
Trim the Stems
Use sharp scissors or a knife to cut about one to two inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This allows for better water absorption. If possible, do this underwater to prevent air bubbles from forming in the stems.
Remove Excess Leaves
Take off any leaves that will be submerged in water. Leaves in the water can rot and cause bacteria to grow, shortening the life of your flowers.
Use Lukewarm Water
Fill your vase with lukewarm water rather than cold. Warm water helps flowers absorb nutrients more efficiently. Ensure the water is deep enough to cover the stems but not so deep that it submerges any leaves.
Add Flower Food
A homemade mix with a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach in a quart of water will work as a flower food.
Find a Suitable Location
Place your vase in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat sources like radiators. Cooler temperatures help flowers last longer.
Change the Water Regularly
Refresh the water every two to three days to keep it clean and bacteria-free. Each time you change the water, trim the stems again to boost water absorption.
Monitor Your Flowers
Check your flowers daily. Remove any wilting petals or leaves to prevent decay from spreading. If any stems start to look limp, give them a fresh cut and change the water.
