The secret to keeping these big, beautiful blooms at their best. Hydrangeas are one of those flowers that instantly steal the spotlight. Voluminous, soft, and almost cloud-like in their beauty. But anyone who’s worked with them knows: they can be a little fussy. The good news? With a few simple steps, they’ll reward you with lasting freshness and fullness.
Here’s how we care for hydrangeas at Florette to keep them thriving!
1. A Clean Start
Always begin with clean tools and a clean vase. Hydrangeas are sensitive to bacteria, so giving them a fresh environment makes all the difference.
2. The Right Cut
Cut the stems on a diagonal to increase water uptake. Then (this is the part many skip) slit the base of each stem vertically about 2–3cm. This opens them up and helps these thirsty stems drink more deeply.

3. Warm Water Bath
Hydrangeas love water, but oddly enough, they prefer it warm. Fill your vase with room temperature water, and change it every 1–2 days to keep things fresh.
If your hydrangeas are wilting, don’t panic. Submerge the entire head and stem in a cool water bath for 30 minutes. They often bounce back beautifully.
4. Mist to Maintain
Hydrangeas don’t just drink from their stems. They absorb moisture through their petals too. A light misting once or twice a day helps keep them hydrated, especially in air-conditioned rooms.
5. Keep Them Cool
Avoid placing your hydrangeas in direct sun, or under air vents. They do best in cooler spots, out of harsh light (think soft shade over spotlight).
Hydrangeas may ask for a little extra attention, but they give back in fullness, softness, and a kind of effortless romance that fills any space.
Treat them gently, tend to them well, and they’ll reward you with blooms that last longer than expected!
